Staff Photo 2013Spend the summer lifeguarding on the beach on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina!

Shore Beach Service is always looking for individuals who enjoy working with people and possess good moral character and high standards of physical fitness. Each year, we hire more than 70 lifeguards from across the country and around the world. Watch the video below to see some footage of our weekly training sessions and other clips from the summer, then read some of the frequently asked questions from prospective employees.

What would I be doing?

High chair edit

• Some lifeguards assigned to water observation in highchairs, but others operate a beach rental stand with umbrellas & chairs and/or sailboats & beach cycles.

• All lifeguards watch designated sections of beach keeping focused, alert, and ready to provide assistance to those using the beaches of Hilton Head Island.

• Our lifeguards are trained to do both highchair and rentals and will likely do both jobs during the summer.

• We do not have beach rental positions available to people who are not lifeguard certified.

• Rental guards operate, and take down the beach rental stand when assigned to that role.

• Lifeguards attend weekly training sessions that cover open water safety & rescue, first aid, beach ecology, and other job related topics.

What are the Hours&Pay?

• All guards work 6 days per week

• Highchair guards are on the beach from about 8:45 pm to 5:15 pm

• Rental guards are on the beach from about 8:15 AM to 5:45 PM (more or less depending on location assignment).

• Gross pay varies with beach assignment and generally ranges from $80 to $100 per day ($480-$600 per week) for first year guards.

• All lifeguards sign a contract committing to a term of employment that is usually at least 3 months during our season (late March-late October)

• Providing the guard completes that term, he or she is eligible for a bonus (about 15% of pay) based on days worked and/or equipment rented.

Where would I live?

• Shore can arrange housing to those guards who do not have their own housing.

• Shore's housing is generally a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment, with 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and living room.

• The apartments are shared with other Shore employees, with 2 guards per bedroom.

• Rent ranges from $80 to $90 per week with utilities included. A $300 security deposit is required.

• Shore will not provide coed housing.

• Many employees arrange for housing and roommates through their own contacts.
