About our Lifeguards

Guards gather at the Relay For Life event.
Shore Beach Service lifeguards are certified in lifesaving, CPR, and first aid. Most are college students from across the country and around the world. In addition to their certifications, the guards participate in weekly training sessions that prepare them for the job and our lifeguard competition held annually on Hilton Head. Our competition, which consists of various swimming and running events, is used to select our team to send to the South Atlantic Lifesaving Association's competition.

A summer working for Shore Beach Service is not only about work and training. This May for the second year, Shore Beach Service participated in the "Relay for Life".The lifeguards challenged attendees in tug o' war and fun cycle races. Shore's staff had a great time raising money for Cancer research, and hope to do it again next year.

Shore lifeguards also participate in several social events. Restaurants, including Casey's, Black Marlin, and Marley's have hosted parties to welcome the guards to the island. A local church sponsors several

cookouts for the guards every year. After teams are picked for competition, team captains arrange events to promote team camaraderie, such as barbeques, softball games, parties at local restaurants, and the Team Spicoli vs. Signal 37 Bowling Challenge (which Signal 37 has won all three years).

Everyone looks forward to Shore's biggest social event of the year, the Employee Appreciation Party (sometimes jokingly called Shore Prom). The gathering has taken place at the Westin Resort for the last three years, where employees dine on the "Seafood Extravaganza"

and try to save room for the amazing desserts. After dinner, there are several presentations, including medal and ribbons for local and regional competition, as well as plaques for Women's, Men's and Team champions of the Lifeguard Competition. The evening concludes with the highly anticipated awarding of the Rookie of the Year, and Lifeguard of the Year.

LIFEGUARD OF THE YEAR AWARD
Each summer, Shore management selects the lifeguard who best exemplifies our "Top Ten Values" and "Goals & Objectives" as the Lifeguard of the Year.

The honor is named the "Scott Freiberger Award," in memory of a former Shore Beach Service lifeguard who passed away due to an aneurysm in 1996 at the age of 23.
